Abraham Tested

5th December 2003
Abraham tested – Sacrifice
Led by Jon Lee and Phek Kin

A study on the sacrifice of Isaac
Readings – Genesis 22: 1-19 (for both groups in this study)
The feedback – from group 1 led by Jon Lee

1. In verse 2, what is God emphasizing as He describes Abraham’s relationship with Isaac? Why this way of breaking the news? *Read Genesis 21:11

2. Knowing God waited 25 years before providing a son for Abraham, how would you expect Abraham to react to God’s instruction? Why doesn’t Abraham object? What do you learn about Abraham based on this obedient actions?
Feedback:
Abraham’s reaction – Go hysterical….
Huh? You talking to me, God?
Why He didn’t object – His past experience made Him strong to believe.
He had faith
He was real obedient
What do you learn about Him – He believed that God would provide.
*Read Hebrews 11:19 “…He did receive Isaac back from death” and Genesis 22:5 “…. We will come back (not I)”

3. Do you think Abraham would actually kill Isaac? Why does God wait until the last second to stop Abraham?
Feedback on the second question – God was that type, it’s His personality
God has a good sense of humor
*Read James 2:21,22 “…. His faith and his actions were working together and his faith was made complete by what he did.”
Sacrifice – Goes all the way to the end until God stops you not you stop yourself.

4. For whose benefit does God see how far Abraham will go: His own? Abraham’s? Isaac’s? or the readers?
Feedback – Through this that happened, everyone benefited.
- God transferred His feelings to His prophet.
- Through this, He is able to reveal and show Himself.
- The resemblance of this sacrifice and the Sacrifice He would make with Jesus.
- Abraham learnt that God will provide and is faithful
- He could have also learnt the importance of being the Father to many descendants, trusting God to keep His promise

5. How do you think you would have reacted to God’s instruction to offer up ‘Isaac’ as a sacrifice?
Feedback equivalent to question 2.

6. Where do you sense God testing or challenging you in your life right now? What have you found helpful when facing this test?
Feedback not enclosed – personal

Giving

28th November 2003
Giving
Dr. Goh Chee Leong

Is Christmas still special to you?
What makes Christmas special?

Giving is the culture people all around the world hold during Christmas. Giving is not something alien to Christmas. Many people give during Christmas – Christians and non-Christians.
Giving is very Christian. Why? It is not just a ritual but part of our faith.

Back-track – The Christmas Story

The incident of Mary getting pregnant was a very big deal. Imagine you telling everyone else you’re pregnant with God’s child, especially during those days, no one would believe you. Joseph chose not to marry Mary to safe-guard his image. At this beginning of the story, they gave of their social status, the respect they received from the community and their reputation. They bore the burden.

Talking then about the wise men, they gave by journey-ing to the place in faith. Mind you, journey-ing somewhere you don’t know and not by plane or train is not pleasurable. They gave of their time and effort to find the Messiah.

The shepherds were told the good news. God gave them the privilege of knowing. They were the ordinary. Angels appeared before the ordinary and not the royalty.

The central Theme of Christmas
The birth of Jesus Christ. God gave His only begotten Son. This is one thing parents appreciate best. As a parent, you want the best for your child. Here, it was not just the giving of Jesus to the world but knowing that He will grow to be suffer, tortured and die on the cross. Ponder upon what it means to give away someone you love and knowing you’re helpless to help them or to take away the pain, to subject your child – your only child to go through pain and suffering.

Chee Leong: If it was me, sent to die to save the world it would be different but sending lets say my daughter would be a no. Even to save the world, so sorry, I won’t.

Therefore, what is giving?
It is meeting the needs of others.
It is about others feeling better and not about me meeting my own personal emotional comfort. (oh, I feel bad if I don’t give / I gave, oh wow, I feel good)
Giving is also not to promote yourself – it is not an act of selfishness (I bought the best gift for him/her)
It involves a cost, a sacrifice. (Time, energy, money, effort, emotional strength)
True giving hurts.

The birth of Jesus Christ was giving in the purest form. God didn’t send His Son to feel good about Himself. He was giving you what you needed and what you wanted – salvation and freedom.

The challenge, guaranteed to make every Christmas special and to make every day Christmas Day.

- Give from within
- Sacrifice and not give because it’s convenient.

Suggestions:
Make a gift, give away one of your precious cd collections at home which you listen to the most, spend time with someone close, treat a friend or family member to a meal.

Friendship Evangelism

21st November 2003
Friendship Evangelism
By Michael William

Why evangelize?
Luke 4:18 “…He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom …”

This is the gospel – telling people who God is and showing people who Jesus Christ is,

What is eternal life?
John 17:3 “….know that He is the true God and Jesus is the Son He sent.”

When Jesus says “No one comes to the Father except through me…” what does He mean?
- Jesus is the way, not the border you have to pass or the gate your open to go through.
- He is the pathway you walk on to reach God and from the first step you take to the very end, you see Jesus because He is the pathway.
- It is not by works but by grace that you are saved.

When people ask, “How does God deal with people?” The answer is in Jesus. How Jesus dealt with people, that’s how God deals with people because Jesus was and is God.

Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.” Salt without water is useless. Salt is only salty with water. If we are the ‘salt’, we are useless when we don’t mix with others out there who are ‘water’. We are useless when we hook to our group of healthy Christians.

1 Peter 2:9 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood….”
The Prophet – Hears God and tells people what God says
The Priest – Hears the world and tells God what they’re going through. He prays for them. He shows them the way to God and doesn’t argue nor get stuck in petty arguments about Christ. He encourages the people to experience God for themselves.
You are a royal priesthood not a royal prophet-hood.

Sometimes, we think too much about the future (heaven and hell) but not the present. Show people who God is and what He offers (eternal life). Evangelism is telling people we know God and He is here. To show people the way, we need to live it and remember that even death cannot separate us as people from God.

Government, Politics and Patriotism

7th December 2003
Government, Politics and Patriotism
John Chung and Dr. Goh Chee Leong

Be politically aware – you’re not too young to be.
The students are the conscious of the country – Chee Leong
As citizens, we are in touch with politics every day of our lives. The university students of other countries rose. We can because we’re idealistic. The important thing here is that your passion is not lost.

Recognizing the authority of the government doesn’t mean we follow (blind allegiance). In Paul’s age, the people respectfully disagreed with the government. “You have the right to have the law that I can’t preach but I can choose to disobey that law because of God’s law. You would have to put me into prison but hey, I choose to submit to God’s law”. Here’s principle against God’s law. Stand up when you need. We love the country, yes, we do.

When I’m patriotic, I’m loyal to the country and I fight for the people. When you respect the government, the authority, you do things within the boundaries of the law. Martin Luther King Jr. was a politician. His ministry was politics. His ministry naturally flowed out to his politics.

Very few people have convictions to get into politics. How can we be salt and light to the world when we don’t know our world? You must be aware to be sent. Know what’s happening in your country and in the world – not for knowledge’s sake but for ‘making difference’ sake.

The church was complacent when it came to WW2. Many Christians closed one eye when they knew. Don’t play ignorance. Open your eyes and respond.

Developing Friendship

26th September 2003
Friendship (Proverbs)
Ps. Kevin Loo

Hushai the companion of David.
The word friend/companion is mentioned 106 times in the bible. Re’a (Reya), a Hebrew word means a companion, a familiar person.

What kind of friends do you have today?
What is a true friend?
We need friends who encourages us to stir our faith and who encourages us to walk with God.

Hushai was a true friend.
Proverbs 17:17 “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity”.
Hushai loved David. Because of times at adversity, a friend becomes a brother. True friends can stand the test of fire.

2 Samuel 16:16 “Then Hushai the Arkite, David’s friend…..” A friend provides the cover but not cover up. You keep a secret / thought in you and not say anything about it.
Samuel 17:14 – Hushai knew that David is the anointed one.
A true friend fears the Lord. There are people who come into our lives for a season to make a change, and then they leave, just like Hushai. He came, he helped and he moved on.

Do not take a friend lightly.
Proverbs 22:11, 27:6 and 27:17

To be a good friend, be sincere, be transparent, be giving, be punctual.
Evaluate yourself. Can you be a good friend? For the friends you have……
Take time to understand each one. True friends are people who rebuke and exalt you at the same time. They’ll check on you – they become your accountability partners. They keep you on the edge and sharp always. God granted us friends to shape our lives.

The impartation of God comes through 3 things
1) Seeking God
2) The laying of hands
3) Relationships

Hebrews 13:7
“Remember your leader, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith”.

Cultivating Diligence

19th September 2003
Proverbs – Cultivating Diligence
By Pastor Jesse – Junita’s mom

The meaning of the word seek is to search until you find.
Diligently means to work hard, to strive.
Hebrews 11:6 “….anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”.

Why do we Christians walk half dead?
It’s because we give up.

You are responsible for the nation beside you. God did not create you for a selfish purpose. Seeking God is not only about going to church. Strive to know Him, to have His mind.

Three steps for seeking Him
1) Get as close as you can to God where you can ‘download’ something from Him
2) Press the right buttons
3) Wait for God to make His move – patience

If you have not the mind of Christ to do what He wants you to do, you’ll be afraid of the things of the world. Societies’ thoughts will influence you. Don’t depend on it. Depend on God. His thoughts and standards doesn’t change. The truth doesn’t change. Ever since you accepted Christ, you should be transforming level by level.

Proverbs 11:10 “Through blessing of the upright a city is exalted….” When you influence, the city is exalted. The favor of God is upon you.
